Fondation Internationale du Bien Vieillir en Afrique

local context

In Côte d’Ivoire, people over the age of 65 account for 2.6% of the population—more than 754,000 people—with an estimated annual growth rate of about 5%. This trend is accompanied by a 35% decline in the birth rate and an increase in the proportion of older adults. However, many older adults do not receive a retirement pension or have insufficient income to meet their needs. As a result, they face numerous vulnerabilities, particularly in terms of health, nutrition, and psychosocial well-being, as well as social isolation. Added to this are ageism, various forms of abuse, and, in some cases, rejection by their families, all of which can further undermine their well-being and dignity.

Présentation

A Vision
To be, every day, the leading institution that—through its actions and values—enables every older adult, regardless of their circumstances, to age well with respect and dignity, infusing life into every year of their existence.

A Mission
To implement, support, and promote initiatives that improve the quality of life for older adults in Côte d’Ivoire and, more broadly, across Africa.

domaines d'action

Health & Charity

Through activities that encourage older adults to adopt a holistic approach to health, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). It also provides, as part of a preventive approach, assistance with health, psychological, cognitive, social, and mobility needs.

The association’s charitable work takes many forms. It enables the implementation of programs that provide charity, guidance, and support to people in need—those made vulnerable by illness, loss of mobility, social isolation, loneliness, or lack of resources, as well as those who are victims of ageism and/or abuse.

Psychosocial Intervention

To promote social participation and foster respect, compassionate care, the right to dignity, and legal protection for older adults of all backgrounds. This will be achieved through public education, inclusive collective action, and cooperation with other public and private organizations.

Education and Training

To support the training of professionals and volunteers who work with older adults, and to facilitate research or the production of information from stakeholders in the fields of gerontology and geriatrics.

THE “PLATE OF THE HEART” PROGRAM

Launched in August 2021 in the municipalities of Port Bouet, Abobo, and Koumassi, this program provides balanced meals every day—7 days a week, 365 days a year—to approximately 50 elderly individuals who are frail, isolated, vulnerable, and particularly dependent on assistance to eat properly. Nearly 56,910 meals have been served with the support of restaurant owners and volunteer companions who provide this service on a daily basis. This program not only offers nutritional advice and meals but also helps strengthen family and emotional bonds through home visits and interactions facilitated by volunteers.

THE PROGRAM TO COMBAT LONELINESS AND SOCIAL ISOLATION

It involves strengthening our presence, solidarity, and compassion toward others whose distress stems not from a lack of food but rather from emotional hardship. As a result, since 2022, the Foundation has been raising awareness and training teams of volunteers to ensure a constant presence and personalized support, helping to combat the scourge of loneliness and social isolation that is affecting an increasing number of older adults. To date, five teams of volunteers are active in the municipalities of Cocody and Adjamé. Their activities include home visits, assistance with household chores, provision of food and non-food items, and the organization of birthday celebrations. This program is funded by the Association Petits Frères des Pauvres.
